The Plan: Robert Quine and Doctor Who

New Years fast approaches. A new year brings fresh starts, opportunities, commitments. My own? To follow my personal passions to their full extent, and write about it. Thus onto the purpose of this blog -- a website to talk about the life and works of Robert Quine, and on the entirety of the Doctor Who media (from sweet cigarette packets from the 60s to the modern TV show). An extremely large undertaking, given the subject matters, and perhaps one that reveals my preference for grandiosity over digestibility, or even possibility.

So, onto the subject matters. Robert Quine, guitarist. In my opinion, an infinite well of talent that far surpassed any of his supposed peers, and took bold steps down the path of perfection. Born December 30, 1942, he'd have been 75 on the day this is published. Sadly, Quine committed suicide on May 29, 2004, after his death of his wife Alice the year prior. His legacy lives on. Here's Waves of Fear, his solo in which is regarded by some to be his best work, and the song that got me into guitars.

Quine was known primarily for being the lead guitarist of Richard Hell and the Voidoids, one of the original and most influential punk bands, and basically fixing Lou Reed when he played on The Blue Mask. His discography, however, is huge, and spans many artists and genres -- from Andre Williams to John Zorn. Stay tuned for weekly-ish posts from me on Quine, including a multi-part biography, album reviews, and (hopefully) interviews with his friends and colleagues.

Pretty much everyone knows what Doctor Who is, so I'll be brief. My mission is to "review", or at the least list my thoughts on, pretty much every story in the Doctor Who universe. That includes not just the television series, but the books, movies, audio dramas, annuals, comics, and various random paraphernalia -- including projector slides, collectible cards from sweet cigarette packets, and more. And as if covering such a comprehensive and massive list wasn't enough, I've decided to do it in in-universe chronological order -- starting from the First Doctor's time before he left Gallifrey, and moving through to the present day.

The resource I'm using for this list and order can be found on the wonderful Andrew Kearley's website, at http://eyespider.org.uk/drwho/compleat.html. As the list is subject to change, I'll be saving my own copy of the First Doctor's list as it is at the time of release of this blog. Later doctors will have updated lists. I'll endeavour to have a post going live on this at least daily, minus Saturdays, which I'll be dedicating to Robert Quine.

So, two overwhelmingly massive projects. It'll probably take many years to complete, especially the second one -- but of course it'll take that long for this blog to build up a following. Much of the content covered in the blog will be out of print, but is likely available online for your perusal. Oh, and the name of the blog (Humanlike Zone) is a reference to the Richard Hell song, The Plan, which I've also referenced in the title of this post. Give it a listen -- Quine's on it! This whole blog is in memory of Robert Quine, 30/12/1942-29/05/2004. Happy birthday, and thanks.
